Are you thinking of trying skiing but don't know where to start? You're not alone! Skiing has become one of the most popular winter activities, but many people are still unsure about how to begin.
We've put together seven key things every beginner needs to know before hitting the slopes. With this basic knowledge, skiing will no longer feel out of reach! Let's explore these crucial facts together!
What is Skiing?
Skiing is a thrilling winter activity where we use skis to glide over snow-covered terrains. It's similar to other board sports like skateboarding, snowboarding, and wakeboarding, but the difference is in the surface – skiing takes place on snow. There are two main types of skiing: Skiing (with two skis) and Snowboarding (with one board). Both require different equipment, techniques, and offer distinct experiences.
If you're looking to master smooth, long-distance glides, then skiing with two skis might be your choice. Skiing involves using two separate skis with poles to help with balance and steering. On the other hand, snowboarding involves standing on one board and using your body weight to shift directions. Snowboarding can be a bit trickier to learn initially, but once you get the hang of it, it's incredibly fun and rewarding. For beginners, skiing is usually easier to pick up, but both can provide lots of fun, so it ultimately depends on what style appeals to you.
Is Skiing Dangerous?
Skiing is a fun and exciting activity, but like any sport, it does come with some risks. When we ski at high speeds or navigate tricky terrains, there's always the chance of falling or getting injured. Especially for beginners, it can be easy to lose control, leading to falls, bumps, or even fractures. Additionally, extreme cold can cause frostbite or hypothermia, and in rare cases, avalanches can pose a risk.
But don't worry! To stay safe, we'll wear the proper safety gear, such as thermal jackets, snow pants, helmets, goggles, wrist guards, and knee pads. These will reduce the likelihood of injury. Before hitting the slopes, we should also practice some basic techniques and choose beginner-friendly slopes. Ski resorts also have safety protocols in place, and it's important for us to follow them. Keep an eye on the weather and snow conditions to avoid dangerous days to ski, and remember, proper preparation can significantly lower the risks!
Where Should We Go Skiing?
There are countless places to ski around the world, including popular destinations in Japan, Korea, China, and even faraway places like New Zealand and Chile. However, Japan is one of the most favored spots, especially for beginners. Why? Because it's relatively close, offers a wide selection of ski resorts, and boasts quality powder snow, which is softer and lighter – making it more forgiving for those still learning.
The skiing season in Japan generally runs from December to April, though it may vary depending on the region. Famous ski areas in Japan include Hokkaido, Nagano, and Niigata, where we'll find ski resorts in picturesque mountain areas. If you're unsure how to get there, you can take the train, bus, or shuttle, or opt for ski package tours that include transport. Either way, the options are convenient!
What Do We Need to Prepare?
There's a fair amount of gear to gather for a skiing trip, but no worries – we've got you covered! To start, we'll need basic skiing equipment like skis, ski boots, poles (for two-ski skiing), a helmet, goggles, and gloves. On top of that, we should make sure to wear layers for warmth, including snow jackets and pants, a beanie, scarf, and ski socks.
Many ski resorts offer equipment rentals, so if you're a beginner, it's more cost-effective to rent them instead of buying. Items like gloves, goggles, and other accessories are usually not available for rent, so it's wise to bring your own. Also, don't forget sunscreen, lip balm, snacks, a small amount of water, and some cash or cards for convenience.
Is Skiing Expensive?
The cost of skiing can vary greatly depending on where you go, how long you stay, and the activities you want to do. Generally, skiing expenses include lift tickets (for cable cars), equipment rental, clothing rental, and lessons. Skiing lessons can be one-on-one or in groups, with prices ranging from a few hundred to several thousand TWD.
Additionally, we need to consider travel costs like flights, accommodation, meals, and transport to and from the resort. A typical one-day lift ticket could cost around 1,000 TWD, and equipment rental can add another 1,000 TWD or so. Skiing lessons, especially for beginners, will also add to the budget. It's best to book in advance and shop around for deals!
Should We Hire an Instructor?
For beginners, hiring a ski instructor can make all the difference. Many resorts have schools or training centers with experienced instructors who can help us quickly learn the basic skills, such as balancing, turning, and stopping. Instructors will also teach us how to fall safely and avoid collisions, minimizing the risk of injury.
You can sign up for group or private lessons at the resort, or book them online ahead of time. Some resorts even offer lesson packages with all-inclusive services, making the process easier. In some cases, these lessons might even come in languages you're comfortable with, so don't hesitate to check out options before arriving!
Group Tours vs. DIY Skiing?
When it comes to skiing, we have two options: group tours or going solo. If we're new to skiing or unfamiliar with the area, group tours are a great option. Everything is arranged for us, from transport and accommodation to lift tickets and lessons. It's convenient, especially if we don't want to worry about planning every detail. Plus, tours often have professional guides who'll make sure we're safe.
On the other hand, DIY skiing offers more flexibility. If we prefer to go at our own pace, this might be the best choice. We can create our own itinerary and take breaks whenever we want. It does require more planning, but if we're up for the adventure, it can be an exciting way to experience skiing.
So, there you have it, Lykkers! Skiing is a fantastic activity that's not as hard to get into as it might seem. With the right gear, a bit of guidance, and a willingness to learn, we can be skiing in no time. Whether we choose to join a group tour or go solo, remember, the most important part is to have fun and stay safe! Happy skiing!
